Health Improvement Program

For the health improvement program, GWP has particularly focused on HIV/AIDS/STI prevention and care through applying the Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) tools supported by other crosscutting programs. For implementing the program GWP is equally supported by FHI/Nepal, VSO/Nepal, Free A Child/USA and Plan International. For health improvement of the community GWP focused on following strategy and activities;

  1. BCI – Outreach, Peer Communication and DIC/ICC/BCC services
  2. STI case referral/treatment and VCT services
  3. Care and support (to People Living with HIV/AIDS)
  4. Advocacy and networking
  5. Mainstreaming HIV/AIDS issue in Development sectors
  6. Capacity building of NGOs/CBOs to address the HIV/AIDS issue

Outreach with Peer Communicators Mobilisation

GWP mobilized 7 field coordinators, 17 outreach educators, 10 community mobilizer and 226 peer communicators in the field and they have conducted door to door outreach in the community. Through this process yearly GWP reaches more than 303750 of community members with awareness message as well as with other component. That means till this time GWP has reached 8201250 community members with awareness message as well as with other component.

Furthermore GWP operated 23 numbers of DIC for 10 years in the GWP working areas and now stick with one DIC and through the Drop In Center (DIC) GWP reaches more than 1115790 people representing (migrant population, TWs, FSWs, Youth/Adolescent). GWP distributed 19,79,802 condoms in the project area among the risk behaving target audiences.

Planned Group Discussions

Every years GWP organized 58 numbers of PGD reaching 580 young girls from the rural community. From the Plan Group Discussion Program GWP has been reached 908280 young girls from the rural community and discussed community issues including but not limited to HIV prevention to care management, STI referral, Saving and Credit, constrains and success in the ongoing IGPs program and required skill for the girls group members (Peer communicators).

Networks /Advocacy/Collaboration

GWP organized more than 891 meeting and reached more than 8910 opinion leaders including but not limited to DACC, NGOs, Schools management, school teachers, Villages Secretary, Mother’s Groups, village political party’s chief. During the interaction GWP shared its program.

Advocate an effective response to the epidemic

GWP also organised 12 media workshop and reached 100 media people during these events. During this reporting period, GWP in association with other stakeholders lobbied to endorsed the HIV and AIDS policy in the workplace by the cabinet for implementation and it was endorsed by the government.

GWP established 9 Village AIDS Coordination Committee (VACC) in its different working villages. GWP in collaboration with government of Nepal developed and pilot-projected the manual with different VACC nurtured by GWP. The concept VACC became so popular that now in every villages of Nepal we do have VACC and it is self operating and supported by local government.

Drop In Center (DIC)

GWP has started DIC since its starting phase. Our DIC (drop in center) are located in the hot spot as well as in the remote villages. From the DIC. DIC Operator delivers message to the target group every day. The DIC has been proved very useful for the community; anyone who visits the centre has appreciated it as a very useful and valuable place for the community. They say “…the centre is disseminating valuable information’s related with STI treatment, domestic violence, girls trafficking, skill training, small business opportunities and HIV AIDS..”

GWP has welcomed and interacted with 516213 people (Male 30% and Females 70%) through DIC. From the DIC the peer educator deliver message about safer sex, HIV and AIDS, STI, human trafficking, human right, sanitation as well they refer target group for STI and VCT service who are in high risk regarding HIV and AIDS during the outreach session. During this year the team also continued interacted with the community for supporting anti trafficking movement and HIV prevention efforts in the community.

School HIV/AIDS program review work shop

GWP in association with VSO and Plan implemented HIV and AIDS awareness to care program at and through the 25 local schools. In association with District Education Office (DEO) GWP was organized School HIV/AIDS program review work shop. In this workshop 18 teachers were participated and Share about the School HIV/AIDS program.

Street Drama Shows

Street Drama is an effective tools of communication for GWP, every year GWP conducts 5 street drama mobilizing its own peer educators and in one street drama we reach more than 300 male and female from the community. Through the street drama GWP has been reached more than 40500 male and female from the community.

Care and support for the people living with STI & HIV & AIDS

GWP conducted more 34020 STI/VCT Static as well as Mobile clinics through those clinics and 456671 patients were covered, out of them GWP diagnosed 101,460 STI patients and from the clinics as well as from the outreach team GWP reached more than 3500 HIV positive people and supported them for CD4 count as well as ARV treatment.

AIDS Day and National Condom Day celebration

Every year GWP organized National Condom day and AIDS Day as well. Through these Days celebrations GWP managed to provide awareness among the community. Around 135000 community people has been reached through AIDS Day and Condom Day Program.

Since its establishment, GWP is working with the following health related services:

  • Safe injection disposal program
  • Multi-sectoral involvement for HIV prevention
  • STI treatment and HIV prevention program
  • Behavior Change Intervention on HIV/AIDS/STI
  • Right based care and support program for people infected and affected by HIV
  • Care & support for people infected and affected by HIV
  • Integrated Health services

As GWP has worked in 20 different districts of Nepal through multiple sectors. GWP has long years on HIV/AIDS/STI  experiences since its establishment from 1993. GWP has implemented STD.HIV/AIDS control  and prevention program with the support of USAID/FHI/AIDSCAp, operating STD/HIV/AIDS control and prevention program for behaviour change intervention at different part of central Nepal in High way region of Naubise to Mugling, Narayanghat, Hetauda, Birgunj, Pathalaiya, Dhalkebar, Janakpur and Mahottari districts and its related areas, which was called STD/HIV/AIDS, outreach and peer communication project. It is called in short from GWP/FHI Project.

Smilarly since 1999 GWP has started STD/HIV/AIDS prevention program as women’s health centre at Kathmandu metropolian City with the support of University of Heidelberg. In 2000, GWP has started STD/HIV/AIDS prevention program in five districts east west highway of mid and far western (Dang, Bankey, Bardiya. Kailali and Kanchanpur) with the assistance of Save the children-US Neda Program.

Similarly since May 2001 GWP has started girls trafficking with the support of free A Child, known as the Putali Project. Under the child vaccine program, GWP has conducted research program on promotion pof safer injecting practices. With the assistance of SWISS DEVELOPMENT CO-OPERATION (SDC), GWP has conducted STDs/HIV/AIDS Prevention activities to the partners of project of SDC Dailekh & Kathmandu districts. GWP has also conducted STD/HIV/AIDS prevention training for MCHW & VHW of health staffs with the assistence of Planm International Bara/Rautahat. GWP was conducting STD/HIV/AIDS clinic every first day of the month at Nijgadh (Bara District), with the cooperation of Bhoruka Public Health Counseling centre Raxual.

On 2006, GWP has started  working for HIV/AIDS/STI prevention program to Migrant population  in Dhanusha with the assistence of  UNDP MSA.  GWP implemented the UNDP supported “Comprehensive Package for Migrant and their families” in 20 VDCs and 1 Municipality on HIV/AIDS/STI prevention in Dhanusha District. Outreach reached 97155 people through one to one outreach contract where more than 12944 people repeated individuals contacted. GWP also provided 2226 STI and  1793 VCT service STI clients, 134946  condoms were distributed . 8018 condom demonstration show from DIC/ICC conducted. (Source: Final report GWP-UNDP)

In October 2007, GWP implemented  the condom promotion package to Female Sex Workers & Hoteliers with the assistance  of  United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at 9 District (Banke,Dang, Rukum, Bardiya, Surkhet, Jajarkot, Dailekh, Mugu and Jumla) through  HIV/AIDS Prevention Program to FSWs, migrant people and IDPs through condom promotion program.
